According to “The Jerusalem Post”, Simon Leviev (real name Shimon Hayut), known as the “Tinder scammer”, was arrested at Batumi airport.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, the arrest was carried out on the basis of an Interpol warrant. Leviev was on the international wanted list. His lawyer stated that his client “still does not understand the reasons for the arrest” and added: “he had been freely traveling around the world.”
Simon Leviev introduced himself as the heir to the Leviev diamond empire and deceived women through the Tinder application. By claiming that his life was in danger, he asked them for large sums of money and managed to obtain around 10 million dollars.
In 2019, he was found guilty of fraud for crimes committed in Israel and was sentenced to 15 months in prison. However, five months later he was released and began presenting himself as a “business consultant”. Nevertheless, his victims are still struggling to recover their financial losses.
In January 2022, Netflix released the documentary film “The Tinder Scammer”. It featured interviews with three women who had been deceived by Leviev. In the first week after its premiere, the film was watched nearly 46 million times and entered the platform’s top 10 most viewed list.
Three months later, in April 2022, the Spanish government issued an arrest warrant against him for using forged documents.
