Chinese journalist who covered COVID-19 jailed
Chinese journalist Zhang Zhan, who covered the start of COVID-19, has been sentenced to four more years in prison. He was previously jailed in 2020 for reporting on hospitals and empty streets in Wuhan.

Zhang was charged with "picking quarrels and provoking trouble." After his 2020 imprisonment, he went on a hunger strike, and police force-fed him. He was released in May 2024 but was detained again three months later.

International organizations call Zhang an "information hero" and urge the Chinese government to release him. The charges are considered baseless.

At least 124 journalists are jailed in China. The country ranks 178th in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index.
