Reaching agreement on the 19th sanctions package against Russia proves difficult

Within the European Union, the issue of adopting the next — 19th sanctions package against Russia has turned into a complex process.

According to EUObserver, EU Permanent Representatives Committee ambassadors will begin discussions on the matter this week, on September 26, in Brussels.

Under the new package, the European Commission proposes to strengthen export controls for Russian, Indian, and Chinese companies. In addition, the export of certain chemical substances, ores, metals, and salts may be banned.

The EC’s proposals also include imposing sanctions on third-country companies suspected of assisting Russia’s military-industrial sector, including Chinese firms. At the same time, restrictive measures are planned against Russia’s “Mir” payment system abroad.

Furthermore, a complete ban on all operations involving “Rosneft” and “Gazprom Neft,” as well as tougher restrictions on a number of banks in Russia and other countries, is also under consideration.
