According to Tagesschau, Turkey's Udofed Association has officially withdrawn its application for the recognition of donar kebab as a national dish within the European Union and the establishment of pan-European standards. Thus, the long-standing dispute between Turkey and Germany was put to an end.
According to reports, if the European Union approved this application, all food establishments would be required to follow strict standards and rules when preparing donors. For example, varieties served with minced meat or with sauce were considered non-standard and had to be named differently.
Experts emphasize that the donor-kabob industry is highly developed in Germany, and the country currently ranks first in donor trade within the European Union. For German entrepreneurs, such restrictions could lead to significant economic losses.
Following Turkey's withdrawal of the application, the procedure for preparing and selling donors will continue according to the existing laws and regulations in each country. Some consider this decision a victory for Germany, while others say that the debate over the true origin and national status of the dish may continue.
