Two billion for drones: new aid to Ukraine

The European Union will allocate two billion euros to Ukraine to support drone production. This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

According to her, Ukraine is considered Europe’s first line of defense, and therefore military aid must be strengthened. “That’s why we agreed to allocate a total of two billion euros for drones,” she said.

The allocated funds will boost Kyiv’s defense capabilities and also allow the European Union to benefit from the latest drone technologies.

Recently, EU countries have been seriously concerned about the threat of Russian drones. More than twenty UAVs entering Polish airspace sparked major debates. Experts noted that destroying such drones with fighter jets is extremely costly and may become a future vulnerability.

For this reason, the European Commission proposed the “drone wall” project. Under this plan, EU countries are expected to jointly purchase cheaper defense systems. Initially, the initiative was intended only for the eastern borders, but after unidentified drones began to appear frequently in Denmark, it was proposed to expand the project across the entire EU territory.

At the same time, the EU intends to form a “drone alliance” with Ukraine. Since the beginning of the war, drone production in the country has increased sharply. If in 2022 only a few thousand drones were produced, by 2025 hundreds of thousands of units are being manufactured monthly.

In addition, Ukraine has established a special military branch – the Unmanned Systems Forces. At the end of September, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi announced the creation of a separate defense system against drones within the armed forces.
