Polish alpinist skied down Everest without oxygen

Polish well-known alpinist Andrzej Bargiel became the first in history to climb to the top of Everest without any supplemental oxygen and managed to ski down. This was reported by The Guardian.

“Climbing to the summit itself was extremely difficult. I had never before spent so much time at such an altitude,” said Bargiel. “Skiing down from Everest without supplemental oxygen was a dream I had been nurturing for many years.”

The alpinist needed nearly 16 hours to cross the “death zone” located above 8000 meters. In this area, the air is so thin that climbers receive only one-third of the oxygen available at sea level. This can lead to brain damage, fluid buildup in the lungs, and even death.

Bargiel had previously attempted to conquer Everest in 2019 and 2022, but without success. In addition, in 2018 he made history as the first person to ski down the world’s second-highest mountain — Pakistan’s K2.

According to the Himalayan database, more than 6000 people have climbed the world’s tallest peak. Of these, only about 200 managed to ascend without supplemental oxygen. Some tried skiing down, but at such an altitude no one had ever managed a full descent without oxygen. Bargiel accomplished it.
