OpenAI, recognized as a leader in the field of artificial intelligence, has reached a historic milestone. The company, made famous through the ChatGPT platform, has been valued at 500 billion dollars, gaining the status of the most valuable private company in the world. This was reported by Bloomberg and Reuters.

According to the information, former and current employees of the company sold shares worth approximately 6.6 billion dollars to investors. Initially, they agreed to sell about 10.3 billion dollars’ worth of shares, but most decided not to take this step, expressing confidence in the future of OpenAI’s business.

Earlier, the company’s total value was estimated at about 300 billion dollars. Following the new evaluation, OpenAI’s value exceeded that of Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Currently, SpaceX is valued at nearly 400 billion dollars and ranks second among private companies worldwide. In third place is China’s ByteDance, the owner of TikTok.

The growth of OpenAI is explained by the enormous interest in it. As of July 2025, ChatGPT has about 700 million weekly active users. Within one week, 18 billion messages were exchanged on the platform.

Interestingly, one of the company’s founders, Elon Musk, although he left the board of directors in 2018, proposed at the beginning of 2025 to acquire OpenAI for 97.4 billion dollars. The billionaire also filed a lawsuit against the company in 2024. In his opinion, OpenAI’s cooperation with Microsoft and its transition to commercial activity contradicted its initial goals.

However, in December OpenAI published documents showing that Musk himself, over time, had supported the idea of transforming the company into a commercial organization. But it was noted that he abandoned this idea because he could not gain full control over the company.

According to Bloomberg analysis, the rise in OpenAI’s value indicates growing competition in the field of artificial intelligence and increasing investor interest. For example, at the end of September, chipmaker Nvidia announced its intention to invest about 100 billion dollars in OpenAI and to supply the company with chips for data centers.
