Fire at Bangladesh garment factory kills 16

A fire broke out at a garment factory in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, killing at least 16 people. The fire started in a four-storey building in the Mirpur area in the afternoon and was put out within three hours.

Flames at the nearby chemical warehouse continued until evening. Reports say plastic and hydrogen peroxide were stored there. These materials fueled the fire and released toxic gas into the air.

Officials said most of the victims died after inhaling toxic gas. It remains unclear whether the warehouse was operating legally.

In recent years, fires have frequently occurred in Bangladesh, which officials attribute to poor safety standards.
