Blue painting sold for 18 million euros in Paris

The painting “California” by French artist Yves Klein, made entirely in one color — blue, was sold at the Christie’s auction in Paris for 18.4 million euros, reported BFMTV.

The artwork, approximately four by two meters in size, is considered one of the largest monochrome works by the artist held in private collections.

“California” was created in early 1961, ahead of Klein’s first and only trip to the United States, as well as before his debut exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles.

Yves Klein patented his specially developed ultramarine shade under the name “International Klein Blue.” According to him, each monochrome work has its own atmosphere and meaning, and for the artist, this color symbolized “infinity.”

According to Christie’s representatives, the fine gravel sprinkled on the surface of the painting gives it a texture reminiscent of the sea or ocean floor.

Yves Klein passed away in 1962 at the age of 34, but his philosophy expressed through the color blue still continues to attract interest in the art world.
