In Spain, a scientific group successfully transplanted organoids created from human kidney cells into a pig’s body, reported El País. During the experiment, the implanted tissues adapted to the animal’s body, and no signs of rejection were observed.
Specialists from the Catalonia Institute of Bioengineering consider this result a new stage in medical development. They improved the method of creating miniature models of human organs — organoids — and embedding them into animal tissues.
During the research, scientists managed to create a biological environment inside the pig’s body similar to that of a human kidney. As a result, the organoids adapted to the organism, and no negative effects on the animal’s health were recorded.
Experts emphasize that this achievement may open new opportunities for humans in the fields of transplantation and regenerative medicine.
