Magnetic storm is expected to intensify in the coming hours

In the coming hours, a magnetic storm may intensify on Earth - experts expect its level to reach G3. This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Earth Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to scientists, the Earth's magnetosphere is currently quite calm, but the situation is changing rapidly. "Since morning, magnetic storms have resumed, which are currently at low and medium G1-G2 levels. Nevertheless, within an hour or two, they will most likely turn into powerful events at the G3 level. "Symptoms of this, unfortunately, are already observed," the laboratory report says.

Magnetic storms are classified according to five power levels: from weak G1 to extremely strong G5. Current magnetic field disturbances are associated not only with the impacts of solar plasma clouds, but also with the activity of a large corona hole directed at the Earth.

Previous modeling showed that our planet would only be at the edge of the solar plasma cloud, so the storm was expected to not exceed the G4 level. However, scientists do not rule out that if the forecast turns out to be incorrect and a frontal strike is launched on Earth, the storm's strength could reach the maximum G5 level.
