In Mali, young and famous blogger Mariam Sisse tragically died. She has over 90,000 followers on TikTok and has been covering the life, customs, and everyday life of the town of Tonka through her videos. At the same time, he gained great popularity among young people by creating content full of social themes and humor, the South China Morning Post reported.
However, on November 7, he was arrested by an unknown group of jihadists. They accused Mariyam of allegedly collaborating with the Mali army, that is, providing information to the military. According to the deceased's brother, "My sister was taken away by jihadists on Thursday. They accused him of serving in the army and publicly executed him the next day."
On Saturday, Sissé was taken on a motorcycle to the center of Tonca and publicly shot dead. The incident occurred on Independence Square in the city. The security service called this "the highest level of barbarism and lawlessness." Local authorities strongly condemned this crime, calling it "murder directed against society."
For information, the activities of jihadist groups have intensified in Mali in recent years. In particular, the JNIM organization associated with "Al-Qaeda" blocked fuel supply routes in some regions of the north of the country, as a result of which schools were closed, and harvesting stopped.
As a reminder, clashes with armed insurgents have been ongoing in Mali since 2012. In 2021, the military junta seized power and identified the restoration of security and the elimination of extremism in the country as its main task.
Mariam Sisse's tragic death brought the issue of social media activists' safety back to the agenda not only in Mali but throughout Africa.
