Meteorologists said, “We hate to break it to you, but a strong magnetic storm has reached Earth and is nearing its peak intensity.” This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences on its Telegram channel.
During geomagnetic observations, a planet-scale magnetic storm was recorded. It is noted that amid a sharp increase in flare activity in recent days, the first of three plasma clouds is expected to approach Earth within 24 hours. The current intensity of the event is G4.66, which is about one-third of the maximum level. It turned out that scientists did not expect such a sharp rise in the geomagnetic field.
“At the moment, the geomagnetic situation differs from the forecast in an inexplicable way. It was expected that only the first of the three plasma ejections—the weakest one—would reach the planet overnight and cause minor storms of G1–G2 intensity,” the statement said. The greatest impact was predicted for midday.
It is believed that yesterday’s strongest flare of the year, due to its record speed, overtook slower-moving plasma clouds. By pushing and compressing them, it affected their density, temperature, and magnetic properties.
