An unexpected situation has occurred in Germany - a wild strain of the poliovirus, which causes polio, has been identified in the country. Reuters reported this, citing data from the Robert Koh Institute.
It is reported that such an infection last occurred in Germany in 1990. However, since 2021, specialists have been systematically examining environmental samples, and the virus was found during such monitoring.
Notably, no cases of illness have been recorded among the population so far. Medical workers attribute this to the high vaccination rate in the country. Vaccination is indicated as the main factor preventing the spread of the virus.
Poliomyelitis is an infection that severely damages the nervous system, sometimes leading to paralysis. It is mainly transmitted through contaminated food and water.
As a reminder, it was recently reported that a new type of virus was also found in Brazilian bats. Samples of it were simultaneously identified in the states of Maragnan and São Paulo.
