Humanity wastes and throws away 1 billion food products every year.

According to the United Nations’ calculations, humanity wastes more than 1 billion tons of food every year. This creates serious pressure not only on food security, but also on our planet — nearly 10 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from such waste.

At the climate summit taking place in the Brazilian city of Belém, experts once again emphasized that this problem is a strategic threat to humanity. According to them, fighting food waste is an important part of strengthening environmental justice and ensuring the safety of future generations.

In this regard, UNEP and several international partners launched the “Food Waste Breakthrough” initiative. The main goal of the project is to halve global food waste by 2030, reduce methane emissions, and lower the risk of hunger.

According to UNEP head Inger Andersen, saving food is an equally urgent task for both rich and poor countries. Because preserving food is a decisive factor in combating hunger and reducing harmful gases in the atmosphere.

The new program, supported by the Global Environment Facility, will help countries and cities create effective strategies to reduce waste. It will also help adapt and expand proven solutions in developing nations.

Experts say that preserving food is not only an economic but also a human responsibility. Because every wasted portion means a warming planet, increasing waste, and a growing threat of hunger.
