In South Africa, police arrested four men who were on their way to join the Russian military. They were stopped at Johannesburg airport. According to police, these individuals were recruited to fight in the Russian armed forces.
The arrest followed a tip-off from Johannesburg airport police. A preliminary investigation revealed that a South African woman had organized the trip of these individuals to Russia and assisted in their recruitment.
The four are suspected of violating laws on providing foreign military assistance and participating in foreign armies without authorization, and are expected to appear in court on Monday. Additionally, police are investigating how 17 South Africans previously stuck in Ukraine were sent to Russia.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an investigation into the case.
