Snapchat messenger blocked in Russia

The Russian Federal Service for Control of Communications, Information Technologies and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) launched an action against the Snapchat messenger and blocked the service. RBK reported this.

According to Roskomnadzor, according to current information, the Snapchat service has been identified as being used in Russia for organizing, carrying out, recruiting into terrorist organizations, and committing other crimes related to terrorism. At the same time, the dissemination of information on this platform, the possibility of committing various crimes against other states, is dangerous, and individuals who were in contact with it have also been identified.

Snapchat was developed in 2011 by Stanford University students Evan Spiegel, Frank Brown, and Bobby Murphy. This platform is known for allowing users to exchange photos, messages, and videos that can disappear in a short time. One of the most important factors in Snapchat's popularity was that it offered users filters and masks that changed their appearance. Similarly, the "stories" function was first introduced in Snapchat.

As a result of Snap Inc.'s public offering in 2017, Snapchat was valued at $25 billion on the New York Stock Exchange. By 2025, the number of monthly users of the service is expected to reach 943 million people.

It should be recalled that earlier it was reported that the WhatsApp messenger could also be blocked due to non-compliance with Russian legislation. These circumstances lead to further strengthening of control over information and communication systems in Russia.
