According to the EF English Proficiency Index, the list of countries with the highest level of English proficiency among European countries has been updated. Interestingly, the Netherlands has maintained first place in this indicator for seven consecutive years. This once again confirms that the population of the country is a stable leader in terms of freedom and clarity in the use of the English language.
Croatia and Austria followed the Netherlands in the ranking. It was noted that English is widely used in these countries, and its relevance in the educational and work environment is high.
At the same time, countries such as Italy, Cyprus, and France remain below average. Analysts link this situation with the methodology of education, the age structure of the population, and the practice of language use.
The study is based on test results involving 2.2 million adults. According to him:
- reading and listening - the strongest skills,
-talking and writing - was found to be at a relatively lower level.
Interestingly, between 2014 and 2025, men's language proficiency increased by 40 points, and women's by 20 points. However, there has been a decline in language proficiency among young people after the pandemic - this is explained by the impact of online learning and a reduced practical environment.
