Women running marathon without headscarves in Iran sparks huge controversy

A major marathon held in Iran unexpectedly became the center of public discussion. On Kish Island, the organizers were arrested because some women participated in the running marathon without a hijab. This was reported by “Iran International”.

About 2,000 women and more than 3,000 men took part in the marathon. The fact that some female participants ran in red T-shirts without wearing a hijab caused sharp debates in the country.

A part of society supported this situation as a sign of women’s desire for freedom. They consider it an open protest against the dress code established by the government.

However, the authorities described this as an absolutely unacceptable action. Not only the violation of hijab rules, but also the holding of the marathon itself was criticized as “contrary to public morality”.

Following this, judicial authorities took measures against the marathon organizers and arrested them.

The issue of the hijab has remained one of the main topics dividing Iranian society into two opposing camps in recent years. The rules are sometimes softened, and sometimes tightened again.

It should be recalled that in 2022, months-long nationwide protests began after the death of Mahsa Amini, who was detained for violating hijab regulations. Her death still remains in the public memory.

Despite the protests being forcefully stopped, it is noted that many Iranian women today still do not follow the established rules. This continues to provoke a strong reaction from the government.
