Kazakhstan is making a major step in the field of logistics in the coming years. Starting from 2027, the country will launch driverless freight trucks in pilot mode within the territory of the Eurasian Economic Union. This was announced by the Minister of Transport, Nurlan Sauranbayev.
To implement the project, special infrastructure will be created in Kazakhstan: a full sensor system necessary for autonomous transport will be installed on the highways. Currently, the initiative is being discussed with neighboring countries and EAEU partners.
According to Sauranbayev, driverless trucks may also reduce queues at border checkpoints. Since the process will be integrated with passport control, it will be carried out much faster.
The minister believes that such vehicles will become an important factor in increasing Kazakhstan’s transit potential. Because most cargo transportation costs are related to drivers’ salaries and mandatory rest rules. Autonomous vehicles, however, can operate 24 hours a day.
Experts note that this experiment could significantly optimize transport flows in the region.
