Israel’s Killing of Commander Threatens Gaza Ceasefire

On Sunday, thousands of Hamas supporters gathered in Gaza City for the funeral of commander Rad Said and three of his aides. They were killed on Saturday in an Israeli strike. Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya said the killing threatens the ceasefire agreement.

Hayya called on U.S. President Donald Trump and mediators to make Israel comply with the ceasefire terms. He emphasized that the killing of Said and others threatens the agreement’s stability.

According to Hamas, a new leader has been appointed to replace Said, and his killing will not distract the group from its goals. Israel considers Said one of the main organizers of the October 7, 2023 attack. Since the ceasefire, Israel controls the eastern part of Gaza, while Hamas controls the western part.

The sides have not agreed on next steps. Israel demands Hamas be disarmed and excluded from governing Gaza, while Hamas refuses to give up its weapons and wants Israeli forces to fully withdraw. Meanwhile, the killing of senior Hamas security officer Ahmed Zamzam in central Gaza shows that violence continues in the area.
