Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban issued a sharp and sensational statement regarding the situation around Ukraine. He emphasized that if Ukraine weakens or collapses as a state, it will be a blow not only to regional but also directly to Hungary's interests.
Orban believes that the war is not strengthening Ukraine, but rather disrupting it economically, socially, and infrastructurally. Therefore, the most correct path for Budapest is to maintain the stability of the neighboring country.
"If Ukraine collapses, it will become a disaster for Hungary. Therefore, preventing this is fully in line with our national interests. War never strengthens a state, it only destroys it," Orban said.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Hungary is still providing serious practical assistance to Ukraine. According to him, almost half of Ukraine's electricity consumption - or more precisely, 44 percent - comes from Hungary. Also, 58 percent of gas imports are supplied through Hungary.
Orban's statement is causing controversy in the European political arena. Some consider it a pragmatic approach, while others emphasize that geopolitical calculations prevail in Budapest's position. However, one thing is clear: Hungary is not indifferent to the fate of Ukraine and does not hesitate to openly express its interests on this issue.
