A group of men from South Africa was recruited for special training in Russia, but they say they were later forced to fight in Ukraine. According to them, they live in cold conditions, dig trenches, and lack food and medical care.
Dubandlela, a father, was proud when his son agreed to train in Russia as a VIP bodyguard. Five months later, he discovered that his son and 16 other South African men had been sent to Russian forces by an unknown mercenary group, leaving him shocked.
The father said his son works in the cold near the front in Donbas, sometimes without food or water, and often cries on the phone. The South African government is negotiating with Russia and Ukraine to resolve the situation.
This case shows the risk of citizens from Africa and other countries being misled into Ukraine’s war. The Kenyan government also confirmed that its citizens were involved on Russia’s side.
