A fire broke out at the Damai elderly home in the city of Manado, North Sulawesi province, Indonesia, killing 16 people and injuring 3. The fire started on Sunday around 20:30 local time.
According to Jimmy Rotinsulu, head of the city fire and rescue agency, many victims were found in their rooms, most of them elderly residents resting in the evening. The fire lasted about one hour.
Police are investigating the cause of the incident. Local officials said many of the victims were unrecognisable and urged their families to contact the hospital where the bodies were taken. Many local residents helped with the evacuation during the fire.
Fires are common in Indonesia. Earlier this month, a fire in a seven-storey office building in the capital Jakarta killed 22 people.
