Russia plans to introduce mandatory mediation for divorce

Russia is considering introducing mandatory pre-trial mediation for family disputes. According to TASS, the preparation of the relevant draft law is planned for 2026-2027.

It is expected that amendments will be made to the Federal Law "On the Alternative Procedure for Settling Disputes with the Participation of a Mediator (Mediation Procedure)." The initiative is being developed as part of the family and demographic policy plan implementation.

According to the idea, if parents in divorce process cannot reach an agreement, they will need to meet with a professional mediator at least once. During the period of such negotiations, it is proposed to suspend the consideration of the case in court.

In addition, the country plans to form a separate registry of mediators specializing in family conflicts.
