In various regions of India, the butterfly pea flower, which previously grew as an ordinary plant, is now becoming a source of income for farmers. This blue flower is widely used in tea, natural dyes and food products. Nilam Brahma, who lives in the state of Assam, also started a small business by growing this flower and says she began earning income in a short period of time.
In recent years, the growing global demand for natural colourants has increased interest in butterfly pea. Although the flower has been approved as a food additive in the United States, it has not yet received full approval in Europe and the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, Indian entrepreneurs believe the product has a future and are expanding cooperation with farmers.
Some companies in India offer farmers seeds, technical advice and stable purchase contracts. Proper harvesting of the flowers and drying them at low temperatures are considered important processes. Women are mainly involved in this work, as picking delicate flowers without damaging them requires great care.
Experts note that the butterfly pea flower may also be beneficial for health. Some studies have shown that it helps control blood sugar levels. As a result, this flower is not only increasing farmers’ incomes, but also helping to form new cooperation and business networks in rural areas.
