Historic agreement in Syria: Peace was established and the Kurds surrendered

Syria's transitional president, Ahmad al-Shar'a, has finally reached a ceasefire agreement with the Kurdish "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDF). This agreement is considered the most important step towards ending armed conflicts in the country and restoring state integrity. According to the SANA news agency, weapons will no longer be fired on all fronts.

Harsh conditions and integration for Kurds

The new document provides not only for the cessation of hostilities, but also for the complete annexation of the Kurdish administration and its military units to Syrian state structures.

  • The end of autonomy: For the Kurds, who for many years dreamed of independent rule in the territories under their control, this was a major political blow.
  • Meeting and weather: Al-Shar'a was scheduled to meet face-to-face with SDF Commander Mazlum Abdi on January 18, but due to unfavorable weather conditions, negotiations were postponed to January 19.

Military victories: Strategic HPP captured

On the eve of the signing of the agreement, the Syrian government troops achieved significant military successes:

  1. The city of At-Tabka: Government forces pushed the Kurds out of this strategic point. Here is a large hydroelectric power station, built with the support of the USSR, which is vitally important for the country.
  2. Power Supply: The new administration promises to restart this station, which has been in Kurdish hands for years, and provide electricity to the local population.
  3. The vicinity of Aleppo: Government troops took control of Deir Khafir, Meskena, and a total of 34 villages. Hundreds of Kurdish soldiers surrendered.

Why was the Berlin visit postponed?

Due to the unstable political situation in Syria and the ceasefire, Ahmad al-Shar'a's planned trip to Germany was canceled. He was to meet with Chancellor Friedrich Mers in Berlin to discuss the restoration of the country after the 14-year war and the return of refugees.

Who is Ash-Shar'a: from Al-Qaeda to presidency

The past of the new Syrian leader is quite controversial:

  • Islamic history: Al-Shar'a, formerly known as Abu Muhammad al-Julani, fought for Al-Qaeda in Iraq in 2003 and spent 5 years in a US prison.
  • Assad's overthrow: In 2017, he formed the Hay'at Tahrir ash-Sham group and began fighting against Bashar Assad's regime.
  • New image: Now he emphasizes that his radical past is behind him and that he wants to restore Syria democratically and peacefully.

Nearly 155,000 people were forced to leave their homes due to the fighting around Aleppo. This new agreement gives thousands of Syrians hope for a return to peaceful life.

In your opinion, can the inclusion of Kurdish military personnel in the state army ensure long-term stability in Syria?
