In Sweden, the topic of abandoning the national currency - the krona - and switching to the euro is back on the agenda. The issue is also taking a serious turn in parliament: it is noted that a special discussion dedicated to the euro has been scheduled at the initiative of the Liberal Party.
According to MP Cecilia Renn, who is promoting this idea, as competition between large countries in the world intensifies, the risks for "small" economies are also increasing. Against this background, the transition to the euro may allow Sweden to strengthen political and economic ties with its European partners, including increasing its influence in the environment of common decisions on currency issues.
The MP's logic is as follows: Sweden has joined NATO and is strengthening defense cooperation with European partners, but the "disconnection" on the currency issue could keep the country a step away from the common system. It is also noted that the use of the euro could be an incentive to expand trade volumes and attract investment.
Another important reason is concerns about the stability of the krona. Reports say that the national currency has lost a significant part of its value over the past decade, and global economic turmoil and instability in the Baltic region could increase pressure on the exchange rate.
This is not the first time that the topic of switching to the euro has been raised in Sweden. In a referendum held in 2003, voters voted against the single European currency - then the "no" result prevailed.
Now the intrigue - has the mood changed? At a time when geopolitics, security, investment and trade are all wrapped up in one package, Sweden's view of the euro may also be reassessed. In short, this is not a decision yet, but the fact that the discussion has begun is a signal for major changes in the future.
