More than 26 thousand livestock died due to "dzud"

In Mongolia, as a result of an extremely cold winter called “dzud” (a Mongolian term meaning a severe winter in which, due to the ground freezing or being covered with snow, a large number of livestock may die from hunger or cold), more than 26,300 livestock died. This was reported by “Central Asia”.
According to information presented by the country’s National Statistical Office on February 12, the extremely cold winter known as “dzud” in Mongolia in January killed more than 26,300 livestock in the western provinces, as well as in the central Övörkhangai province. It was noted that at least 11 out of the country’s 21 provinces were affected by “dzud”.
For reference, livestock husbandry is one of the main pillars of Mongolia’s economy, and nearly 40 percent of the country’s nomadic population depends on it. However, due to the harsh and long winter, most Mongolian nomadic herders lose livestock every year. According to the National Statistical Office, by the end of 2025, Mongolia had 58.1 million livestock.
