Deepfake fraud is causing billions of in damage worldwide

The development of digital technologies has opened new doors for criminals. Cybersecurity experts reported that in 2025, fraudsters using dipfake technology deprived the world's population of $1.1 billion. The fact that this indicator has tripled compared to last year seriously concerns specialists in the field.

Social networks - a "hunting ground" for scammers

More than 80% of the lost funds are accounted for by popular platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram. Criminals are forging the faces and voices of famous politicians, business and financial leaders, encouraging people to invest in dubious investment projects.

For example, fake videos featuring Polish President Karol Naurocki and German Chancellor Friedrich Mers have circulated, alleging that the heads of state are urging citizens to bet on unknown platforms. Because such fake videos appear convincing, thousands of people are becoming victims of deception.

Virtual love with a "famous actor" and a loss of 800 thousand euros

One of the most pathetic ways to use dipphaics is "romantic fraud." Criminals dramatize audio and video conversations that are indistinguishable from real ones to establish close relationships with victims.

An incident in France shocked the whole world: a woman firmly believed through the internet that she was "in a romantic relationship" with Hollywood star Brad Pitt. The fake "Brad Pitt" claimed he was seriously ill and needed money for treatment, and collected more than 800 thousand euros from the woman. In reality, this turned out to be the work of a group of professional scammers.

Where are the fraud centers located?

According to research, such criminal groups operate mainly from special centers located in two regions - West Africa (Nigeria and Ghana) and Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines).

Although the financial damage from romantic scams is less than from investment scams, the psychological trauma they cause cannot be measured in money. People are losing not only their funds, but also their trust in their loved ones.

Have you ever encountered suspicious advertisements featuring celebrities on social media? Do you know how to distinguish a dipfake from a real video?
