An American F-35 fighter jet made an emergency landing at an air base in the Middle East after being hit during a combat mission over Iran, according to CNN. The aircraft was able to land safely, and an investigation into the incident is now under way.
CNN said the jet came under attack while operating in Iranian airspace. If confirmed, the incident would mark the first known case since the start of the current war in which Iran has successfully hit a US military aircraft.
The F-35 is a fifth-generation fighter and is considered one of the most advanced combat aircraft in service. Its estimated cost is around $100 million per unit. Both the United States and Israel are using F-35 jets in military operations linked to the conflict with Iran.
