Iran informed the UN about ship passage

Iran has told the UN Security Council and the International Maritime Organization that vessels it considers “non-hostile” may continue to pass through the Strait of Hormuz if they coordinate with Iranian authorities and follow announced safety rules, according to a diplomatic note seen by Reuters. Reports Tengrinews.kz.

The message was sent to all 15 members of the Security Council and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and was later circulated among the 176 members of the London-based maritime agency. In the note, Iran said it had taken what it called necessary and proportional steps to stop aggressors and their supporters from using the waterway for hostile actions against the country.

Iran also said that ships, equipment and other assets linked to the United States, Israel, or what it described as other participants in aggression would not qualify for peaceful or non-hostile passage. The statement comes at a time of rising regional tension and growing concern over the safety of one of the world’s most important shipping lanes.

According to Reuters, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, has nearly stalled, creating disruptions in energy markets. Earlier, US President Donald Trump said the route could reopen very soon if diplomatic talks with Iran succeed, and later told reporters that Washington was speaking with what he called the right people in Iran.
