Volkswagen is working on a high-performance version of its future electric hatchback, the Golf. In its ninth generation, this iconic model from the German brand is expected to go fully electric while still retaining the GTI badge.
Engineers and marketers are brainstorming ways to make the car feel like a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. Ideas being considered include artificial engine sound simulation and simulated gear shifts.
The first prototypes are already being tested, providing some initial insights.
According to insiders, the Golf 9 is expected to debut in 2028 or 2029. The car will be built on the latest SSP platform, developed in collaboration with Rivian engineers.
A high-performance GTI version could arrive in 2030, featuring variable torque distribution between the wheels. This approach allows Volkswagen engineers to preserve the DNA of previous models while transitioning to a new technical era.
Furthermore, the torque management system in the new electric Golf GTI may not be entirely software-based but could involve mechanical components as well.
For example, the upcoming ID.2 GTI, set to debut in late 2026 and go on sale in 2027, will feature an electronically controlled mechanical locking differential.
However, these details remain unofficial. Volkswagen executives and engineers still have differing opinions on key technical aspects. With several years left before launch, the final decisions are yet to be made. The electric Golf GTI is expected to be unveiled in approximately five years.
