At the beginning of February, China's largest automaker BYD announced that all its vehicles would be equipped with its proprietary autonomous driving system, God’s Eye. This decision caused a revolution in the Chinese automotive industry. Geely, unwilling to surrender a technological advantage to its competitor, has made a similar announcement. Now, the G-Pilot autopilot system will be available across all Geely, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, and LEVC models.
Until recently, autonomous driving technology was an expensive feature. For instance, Tesla offers its FSD (Full Self-Driving) system for $8,000. Mercedes-Benz only installs its Drive Pilot system, which meets Level 3 autonomy standards, on high-end EQS and S-Class models, and it is currently certified only in the US, requiring a $2,500 upfront payment and a subscription. Given this, the decision by Geely and BYD to make autopilot systems more accessible has been welcomed by Chinese car buyers.
G-Pilot: different levels of configuration
Like BYD’s God’s Eye system, Geely’s G-Pilot offers various configurations for different price segments. In fact, Geely has introduced five versions, compared to BYD’s three. These versions differ in both software and hardware:
- G-Pilot H1 – Equipped with 10 cameras and 5mm radar sensors, it supports adaptive cruise control, self-parking, and highway autopilot.
- G-Pilot H3 – Features the same 10 cameras but with 3mm radar sensors. This version introduces urban autopilot.
- G-Pilot H5 – Includes a lidar sensor and an additional camera, allowing full "door-to-door" autonomous driving.
- G-Pilot H7 – Features enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities and a more powerful computing platform.
- G-Pilot H9 – Comes with 13 cameras and multiple lidar sensors. It is expected to obtain Level 3 autonomy certification in the future.
Deep AI integration
Beyond autonomous driving, Geely is also integrating artificial intelligence deeply into its Flyme Auto operating system. The new system will feature an advanced voice assistant with animated avatars, significantly improving the user experience.
