40 years of "Tetris" and the popular game cinema

“Tetris,” a favorite game of children, teenagers, and adults around the world, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. First released in 1984, this game has captivated several generations over the years. “Tetris” was one of the earliest video games to go global, with its carefully crafted block puzzles challenging players’ speed and logic.

In 2020, director Jon S. Baird, inspired by the success of “Tetris,” began filming a movie with the same name. Stars Taron Egerton and Nikita Efremov played key roles. The movie highlights the dramatic story behind the creation of the game, pays special attention to its creator Alexey Pajitnov, and details how the game became a worldwide phenomenon.

Another iconic game is “Warcraft.” Today, “World of Warcraft” is still one of the largest gaming communities worldwide. Its origins date back to 1994 with “Warcraft: Orcs & Humans,” which introduced the epic struggle between orcs and humans in Azeroth and launched a new direction for fantasy storytelling.

The “Warcraft” movie was directed by Duncan Jones. He carefully brought the original game’s story to the screen in a unique and faithful style. The conflict between Lothar and Durotan, the use of magic, and strong visual effects are among the film’s main highlights.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” managed to keep the spirit of the iconic blue speedster game. After fans reacted negatively to the character’s initial design, the studio listened and redesigned Sonic. As a result, the movie became lively and humorous and sparked a franchise. The fourth part is scheduled for release in 2027.

Another childhood classic, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” was also brought to the big screen in a new format. Mario and Luigi, Brooklyn plumbers, set out to save Princess Peach. The first movie adaptation was not successful, but the new 2023 film attracted millions of viewers.

After the update, the film grossed over one billion dollars at the box office. For this reason, movies based on video games are not only a source of childhood nostalgia but have become successful franchises and new adventures for viewers of all ages.
