An artist named Gäpälani Wanambi from the Arnhem Land region in northern Australia has won the most prestigious competition for Indigenous artists — the Telstra Art Award. Her work, titled “Burrwu, Flower”, is a nearly three-meter-wide metal panel created from discarded and used road signs.
The prize amount was 100,000 US dollars, serving as recognition not only of her creative effort but also her contribution to reinterpreting historical and cultural heritage.
Her winning piece is more than just metal — it is an example of how waste from roads can be transformed into innovation, blending material and spiritual values.
In 2024, she also won Australia’s most prestigious award for female artists — the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, receiving $35,000.
