Every person in life has experienced hiccups. In some cases, it seems short-term and harmless, but it can occur under the influence of various factors.
The main causes leading to hiccups:
— Excessive consumption of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages;
— Drinking carbonated beverages and consuming very spicy food;
— Eating too quickly;
— Excessive laughter or speaking loudly;
— Drinking beverages directly from a bottle;
— Swallowing too much air;
— Consuming very hot or very cold liquids;
— Stress and various emotional problems.
Ways to get rid of short-term hiccups are diverse:
— Swallow one teaspoon of sugar or honey;
— Chew several cloves on an empty stomach;
— Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then continue to breathe slowly;
— Pull your knees to your chest, hug them with your arms, and remain in that position for several minutes;
— Close your ears with your fingers and drink water through a straw;
— Sit on a chair and try to drink water without using your hands;
— Swallow one teaspoon of salt, then drink a small amount of water (while staying calm);
— Observe how many seconds your hiccups repeat and try to cough just before an episode;
— Not worry about hiccups and wait a little (sometimes they go away on their own);
— Breathe in and out into a paper bag;
— Quickly drink a glass of ice water;
— Drink lemon juice;
— With a doctor’s recommendation, massage the carotid artery in the neck.
Experts emphasize that if hiccups are short-term, it is not a worrying condition. However, if they last for a long time, you need to see a doctor. Because prolonged hiccups may be a sign of other diseases.
