In recent years, the impact of microplastics on human health has been increasingly discussed. Previously, it was said that it mainly negatively affects the heart, lungs, or nervous system, but now an international group of scientists has come to another serious conclusion - plastic particles can also threaten the health and strength of bones.
Annually, more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide. Its tiny particles are found in water, food, air, and even blood. Scientific research shows that microplastic has even been detected in the brain, breast milk, and bone tissue. This further intensified the concerns of specialists.
Rodrigo Bueno de Oliveira, coordinator of the Laboratory for the Study of Minerals and Bones at Campinas University, stated that during the tests, it was discovered that microplastic particles could penetrate the bone marrow and disrupt its function.
Experiments on bone tissue cells have shown that microplastics reduce their viability, accelerate the aging process, and exacerbate colds. In animals, this condition led to bone fragility and weakness," says Oliveira.
According to the scientist, the effects of microplastics on bones have not yet been fully studied. However, existing research confirms that it can penetrate into bone and disrupt metabolic processes.
Experts recommend regular exercise, proper nutrition, and the use of bone-strengthening medications. However, the influence of microplastics on these factors has not yet been taken into account.
This means that humanity faces a new and serious threat. According to researchers, if this process is not studied more deeply, it may become one of the main causes of microplastic bone diseases and bone fragility in the coming years.
