Today, on May 5, around 6:00 a.m., a powerful gas eruption under high pressure occurred at the “25 Years of Independence” gas field located in Boysun District, Surkhandarya region. Photos and videos circulated online show gas gushing out in a fountain-like form, rising tens of meters into the air.
The first official information about this emergency situation was released almost 8 hours later, at 13:57. According to the Ministry of Energy, the incident occurred at Well No. 202, and the erupting gas contains a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide.
The ministry emphasized that to prevent the spread of the dangerous gas into the environment, the stream was burned off under control. Officials report that the situation is currently fully under control and that there is no threat to residential areas.
Emergency response teams from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Uzbekistan, the State Inspectorate “Sanoatkonttehnazorat,” and the Militarized Unit for Preventing and Eliminating Open Oil and Gas Eruptions are working on site. The area is cordoned off, and enhanced safety measures are in place.
It is worth noting that a similar incident occurred previously at this well. On March 27 of this year, a gas eruption was also observed at Well No. 202, and the gas was similarly burned off under control.
On April 22, the drill string collapsed, and although the fountain was halted, a weak gas flow (griffon) began. To investigate the causes of the current accident and eliminate the consequences, qualified foreign specialists have been brought in.
Experts stress that all potential hazards are being assessed, and the situation is under full control. It has been repeatedly emphasized that this incident does not pose any risk to nearby settlements or public health.
Currently, all necessary measures are being taken to eliminate the emergency, control the situation, and prevent further consequences. More detailed information will be provided as it becomes available.
