On May 17, around 19:00 in the evening, the weather in Tashkent suddenly deteriorated, as the city was engulfed by strong winds and a dust storm. Just hours before, the sky had been clear, but it suddenly darkened and was covered by a dense dust cloud. The powerful wind lifted leaves and debris into the air on city streets, posing a serious threat to the population.
According to a report on the “Millar” program of the National TV channel, as a result of the strong wind, a tree fell on one citizen, leading to grave consequences. Two individuals were seriously injured in this tragic incident and were immediately taken to a medical facility.
Murad Qodirov, a responsible doctor at a hospital in Tashkent city, stated that one of the injured individuals was already in critical condition upon arrival at the medical facility and, despite all efforts of the doctors, died in the emergency room.
The second injured person was diagnosed with a severe traumatic brain injury. Doctors carried out a long and complex surgery to save his life. Currently, although his condition is still critical, it is reported as stable, and he is being treated in the intensive care unit.
The wind also caused significant damage in other parts of the city. Especially in the central and heavily trafficked streets, several trees were reported to have fallen on cars and buses. In particular, a Spark vehicle and a passenger bus were crushed under fallen trees and suffered technical damage, but fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in these incidents.
Due to the impact of the strong wind, parts of the roofs of some buildings in the city were also observed to have been blown off. Emergency workers from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, together with utility services, are continuing to eliminate the consequences of the accident.
As a result of this strong dust-laden wind, the ecological situation also seriously worsened. At that time, Tashkent rose to the top of the global air pollution index. This poses a serious threat to public health.
In connection with the situation, the Ministry of Health issued special recommendations to the public, urging citizens not to go outside unless absolutely necessary. If it is necessary to go outside, they emphasized the importance of using medical masks or special respirators, increasing indoor air humidity using humidifiers or by hanging wet towels in rooms, and consuming plenty of water.
Additionally, the Sanitary-Epidemiological Committee also called on the public to exercise caution and advised against spending time outdoors until the air conditions improve. In cases of medical necessity, citizens were reminded to promptly call the emergency medical service at “103”.
Currently, the damage caused by the strong wind — including fallen trees, collapsed roofs, and other destruction — is being eliminated in various parts of the city. Although some areas are still experiencing the consequences of the storm, rapid response measures are being implemented by specialized services to fully stabilize the situation.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder for the city’s residents to exercise caution and strictly adhere to safety guidelines during strong winds. It is also important for the population to regularly follow weather forecasts during such unfavorable natural conditions. Indeed, it should never be forgotten that human life and health are always the most valuable priority. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
