A gas leak in the Muynak district of Karakalpakstan has seriously complicated the situation, the Ministry of Energy reported. On July 26, 2025, during drilling operations at the "Muynak" field located in the "Uchsoy" mahalla, gas leakage was detected at a depth of 4707 meters in well No. 1. This well is the first site where drilling began at this field.
The gas flow was much higher than expected, and all safety regulations were strictly followed at the time of the incident. Special services — the management of “Uzbekneftegaz” JSC, “Uzbekgeofizika”, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and local authorities promptly arrived at the scene. At present, all measures are being taken to reduce the pressure in the well and ensure safety.
Importantly, this well is located far from residential areas, and the leaking gas does not contain sulfur — it is pure methane. According to the Ministry of Energy, natural gas extracted from all fields in the Ustyurt region also does not contain sulfur compounds.
Recall that in September last year, a hydrogen sulfide leak occurred at the Boysun gas field, resulting in a tragedy in which several people died. This time, thanks to prompt and professional actions, no harm was caused to people or the environment.
Final conclusion: The technogenic situation at the Muynak gas well has been completely brought under control by specialists. All safety measures have been taken, and the absence of casualties as well as the harmlessness of the gas composition have been officially announced. Local and republican organizations have once again demonstrated their ability to work quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
