Speed may be increased on five roads in the capital, new plans revealed

A plan to raise the established speed limit for vehicles on certain roads is being discussed in Tashkent city. This was reported on August 12 at a session of the City Council of People's Deputies by the Deputy Head of the Tashkent Traffic Safety Department, Elmurod Alimov.

According to him, a proposal has been made to increase the maximum permitted speed for vehicles to 80 kilometers per hour on Bunyodkor, Sebzor, Ahmad Donish, the Tashkent Ring Road, and Yangi Uzbekistan streets, which have significant traffic flow. Alimov emphasized that work on this matter is being carried out in cooperation with relevant agencies.

During the meeting, one of the deputies asked when the new speed limit would be put into effect. According to Elmurod Alimov, the proposal has been submitted to the city administration and relevant organizations, and once an official decision is made, it will be announced to the public.

For reference, in April 2023, the speed limit in the country's cities was reduced from 70 km/h to 60 km/h due to the high fatality rate from road accidents. This measure was implemented to ensure safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents.

Alimov also stated that a proposal to introduce one-way traffic on 12 streets of the capital (exact locations not yet disclosed) is being considered. The aim of this idea is to reduce traffic congestion, prevent road accidents, and create a comfortable environment for road users.

The Deputy Head of the Traffic Safety Department noted that in the summer months, due to power outages, traffic lights often stop functioning.

— “When traffic lights stop working, traffic order is disrupted. Such a situation can last for 5–6 hours, sometimes 8 hours or 2 hours. During this time, we rely on the physical work of inspectors,” he said.

As a solution, Alimov proposed installing uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems at all central intersections in the capital.

— “If we install UPS devices at 500 central intersections with traffic lights, in case of a power outage they will be able to operate for another 5–6 hours. Until the electricity supply is restored, our traffic lights will be able to function fully,” he emphasized.

Such changes to the city's traffic system are important not only for drivers but also for pedestrians. Official decisions on these proposals and their implementation are expected in the near future.
