Punishment for Illegal Religious Education of Children Has Been Increased

According to the press service of the Bukhara Regional Department of Internal Affairs, individuals involved in illegally providing religious education to children have been identified. During a special operation carried out by law enforcement bodies, it was discovered that people living in Shofirkon district were illegally providing religious education to children in their own home.

It was reported that the educational process was conducted in unsanitary conditions and under physical and psychological pressure. Among the students there were also children who had come from Samarkand and Jizzakh.

A total of three children were drawn into the process of receiving religious education. It was noted that since August of this year, liability for illegally providing religious education to children in Uzbekistan has been strengthened.

Now, instead of administrative liability, responsibility for such offenses is stipulated in the criminal code. In connection with this incident, a criminal case has been opened under Clause 2 of the “Violation of the procedure for teaching religious doctrines” article of the Criminal Code.

The accused may face up to three years of imprisonment. Currently, investigative actions are ongoing.
