Pharmacies caught giving lotion instead of medical alcohol

The Competition Committee reported that it conducted a special study in pharmacies using the “mystery shopper” method. The probe was prompted by consumer complaints: in some cases, when people asked for 70% medical alcohol, pharmacy staff offered lotion instead.

According to the Committee’s press service, more than 20 pharmacies were inspected. As a result, it was found that in about 25% of pharmacies, when alcohol was requested, lotion was provided instead. In other words, at every fourth outlet a customer could leave thinking they bought alcohol, but actually with a different product.

The Committee’s statement also highlighted another important point: in the production of medicines, GDP certificates were introduced and quality control was strengthened. During this period, some alcohol producers did not obtain a license and switched to producing lotion instead of alcohol. Most importantly, consumers were not given sufficient and complete information about this change, which misled people.

Why is this dangerous?

Because medical alcohol and lotion are not the same. Their purpose, effect, and intended use differ significantly.

70% medical alcohol is used in healthcare for the following:

  • treating skin before injections;
  • sterilizing instruments and equipment;
  • treating wounds;
  • use during surgical procedures.

Lotion is a cosmetic product with a relatively lower alcohol content and is mainly intended for:

  • cleansing the skin and reducing excess oiliness;
  • removing makeup residue.

Therefore, offering lotion instead of alcohol may not deliver the expected result. Worse still, if someone believes it is alcohol and uses it for sterilization or wound care, it may be ineffective and increase the risk of harm to consumers’ health.

The conclusion is this: when you ask for “alcohol” at a pharmacy, pay attention not only to the name but also to the product type and intended purpose. Because this is not just about a purchase — it’s about safety and health.
