Uzbekistan may restrict taxis older than 15 years in cities

A new proposal to regulate taxi services in Uzbekistan’s cities has been put up for discussion. In a draft law published by the Ministry of Justice for public consultation, an important requirement is предусмотрено for cars operating in cities as non-route taxis: the service life of such vehicles may not exceed 15 years could become mandatory.
That is, if the draft is adopted, there may be restrictions on providing taxi services with vehicles used as “non-route taxis” within city limits once they pass a certain age threshold. This proposal could primarily serve to renew urban passenger transport, improve safety, and modernize the vehicle fleet.
The draft addresses not only taxis, but also other rules related to the urban passenger transport system. In particular, opening, changing, and closing urban passenger transport routes is also expected to be covered by a mechanism for developing the procedure. This means that in the future there will be a clearer system for how route-related decisions are made, which criteria they rely on, and how they are formally documented.
Naturally, the discussion of such changes is of interest to both everyday taxi drivers and passengers: on the one hand, more safe and better-maintained vehicles may appear; on the other hand, requirements for those working in the taxi market may become stricter.
In short, for now this is only a draft law. During the discussion, proposals, objections, and additions may be made. But the direction is clear: urban taxi services and transport management are moving away from “business as usual” toward systematization through rules.
