Oil Spills into River Following Severe Flash Floods in Surkhandarya

Oil spills into river following heavy floods in Surxondaryo

Information has circulated on social media regarding reports of oil crude flowing through a river in the Kumkurgan district of the Surxondaryo region. Shuhrat Suyunov, spokesperson for the Ministry of Water Resources, has issued an official response to the situation.

According to the official, temporary oil storage basins were located on the left bank of the Khangaronsoy stream, which flows through the Kofrun neighborhood in the Baysun district. These basins were established between January and February of this year by ERIELL Group, using soil dams to prevent crude oil extracted during drilling processes from leaking into the stream. The oil collected in these basins had been transported away using specialized equipment.

Yesterday, April 23, intense rainfall in the Baysun district caused the water volume in the Khangaronsoy stream to rise, leading to floodwaters overtopping the temporary dams. As a result, water mixed with oil flowed through the Bandikhansoy stream in the Bandikhan district and eventually entered the Surxondaryo River in the Kumkurgan district.

It was reported that on the same day, several basin dams located along the Khangaronsoy stream in the Kofrun neighborhood were restored by ERIELL Group, and the discharge of oil into the water was completely halted.

Currently, the Amu-Surxon Basin Management of Irrigation Systems and all regional water management organizations have increased surveillance in areas at risk of flooding. Furthermore, a 24-hour duty shift has been established, and the situation remains under constant monitoring.
