Madrid’s Real Madrid lost both Champions League quarter-final matches against Arsenal (0:3 and 1:2), failing to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2020. After this defeat, serious changes are expected in the team, particularly an increased likelihood of head coach Carlo Ancelotti’s resignation.
Famous insiders like Fabrizio Romano reported the possibility of Ancelotti’s dismissal right after the first match against Arsenal. According to Sky Sports, the Italian specialist might be sacked following the Spanish Cup final scheduled for April 26, where Real Madrid will face Barcelona.
Currently, Madrid sits second in the Spanish league, trailing Barcelona by four points. Ancelotti himself commented on the situation:
“I could leave the club at any moment. This is a decision for the management. It could happen now or at the end of the season. I will always be grateful when my time at Real Madrid comes to an end,” he stated.
Club president Florentino Perez is also aware that players are losing confidence in Ancelotti. According to Relevo, some key players opposed Ancelotti’s tactical decisions against Arsenal, and the president has been informed of their dissatisfaction.
Xabi Alonso, currently coaching Bayer Leverkusen, is named as the primary candidate to replace Ancelotti. Alonso led Bayer to both league and cup victories last season. Additionally, renowned German coach Jürgen Klopp’s name has surfaced. Klopp left Liverpool at the end of last season and currently works for Red Bull but is reportedly considering returning to coaching.
“Certainly, names like Xabi Alonso and Jürgen Klopp are being mentioned. But I hope the president decides to keep Ancelotti. Working at Real Madrid is a tough task for any coach,” former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said.
Real Madrid’s next match is on April 20 against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga’s 32nd round. The team has only won once in its last five matches.
