Croatian star Luka Modrić, who has been playing for Madrid’s “Real” club since 2012 and who has played a key role in the team’s greatest achievements over the last decade, will see his contract expire on June 30 of this year. Previously, the club’s management had intended to end cooperation with the 39-year-old footballer.
However, the factor that completely changed the situation was the future head coach of the “Los Blancos” — Xabi Alonso. According to the publication Marca, Alonso was greatly impressed by the experienced playmaker’s physical condition and level of play in the last season, and he asked the management to extend the agreement with Modrić.
Modrić has no intention of stopping yet
The captain of the Croatian national team has dreamed for many years of finishing his career precisely at “Real”. Although the footballer is approaching the age of 40, even in the concluding season he went onto the field in important matches and demonstrated a high level of play.
Alonso’s trust — the beginning of a new chapter
Modrić agreed to a sharp reduction in his salary to stay one more year at his beloved club. He will be offered only a one-year contract. At the same time, during the Club World Cup (June 15 – July 13), Xabi Alonso intends to make use of Modrić. This tournament may be the last international test in the “Los Blancos” squad for the 39-year-old footballer.
Luka Modrić highly appreciated the trust and respect from Xabi Alonso and regards this decision as a “respectful turning point” in his career.
