Manchester City head coach Josep Guardiola shared his thoughts on the return of one of the team's captains, Rodri, to the pitch. The 29-year-old Spanish midfielder played in an official match for the first time after a nine-month break in the Club World Cup second-round match against Wydad (2:0).
Guardiola emphasized the importance of Rodri's gradual recovery from a long injury and his slow return to sporting form:
“We plan to take care of him. It’s been nine months since his injury — that’s a very long time. Rodri is trying to regain full form and feels better in every game. He really wants to help the team, to be on the field, but we will approach him without rushing, cautiously,” said the coach.
The specialist noted that the minutes given to Rodri in the last match are important for the player and expressed hope to see him soon in the starting lineup:
“His participation in the last game will help him get into shape. He still has many opportunities ahead,” said Guardiola.
Next match — against Al Ain
In the next round of Group G, Manchester City will play against UAE champion Al Ain on June 23. It is expected that Rodri’s playing time will increase in this match.
Also, the Wydad team will play against Juventus on June 22.
Why is Rodri important for City?
Let us remind you, Rodri is a key link in the team's game build-up and was also the author of the decisive goal in the 2023 Champions League final. His return to the pitch not only restores City’s tactical strength, but also stabilizes the team balance.
Guardiola’s cautious approach once again demonstrates his serious attention to the players’ health. Now millions of City fans hope Rodri will fully recover and again delight them with his top-level performances. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
