Another dramatic turn in the European transfer market — negotiations between Barcelona and the 22‑year‑old winger Nico Williams ended without a deal. Today, Athletic Bilbao officially announced a historic contract extension with the player until 2035. This event became one of the most discussed news in Spanish football.
According to The Athletic, Barcelona had hoped to fit Williams into next season’s transfer budget. However, executing the deal required the player’s full consent. Under Spanish law, the player or his agent must personally transfer the funds to La Liga’s central office in Madrid to complete the payment.
Negotiations took place last week, but the key issue — Williams’ side demanded guarantees that if there were any obstacles to his registration, he could regain free agent status. They also stated that Arsenal, Bayern and Athletic themselves were offering him better terms.
Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, did not accept these demands and assured that Williams would be registered before the end of the summer window. Yet, they were unwilling to risk losing the 58 million € player.
Even Wednesday evening, Barça officials believed the deal would go through, expecting Williams' desire to join would overcome obstacles. But unexpectedly, Athletic released an official statement announcing the contract renewal until 2035.
Curiously, Barcelona's management and many players learned about Williams' decision only from a video on social media. The club had discussed a squad number for him; everything seemed settled — but it all ended differently.
This case showed again that big money and complex negotiations decide the European transfer market. Nico Williams chose to stay at his hometown club Athletic and sign a historic contract. Barcelona was left without their target star.
Now fans and analysts are watching closely how Barça will respond after this transfer drama. In the football world, stories of lost chances and failed deals continue to unfold. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
